How to minimize sunburns and ultraviolet exposure

By Dr. Lynn Utecht, Atlantic Dermatology - 4/19/2013

With summer almost here, we wanted to provide you with some helpful guidelines to minimize sunburns and ultraviolet exposure to you and your family. While most skin cancers are curable when detected and treated early, prevention is optimal.

Be good to your skin this summer by following these tips:

Avoid the mid day sun between the hours of 10am and 4pm.

Avoid tanning and UV tanning beds/booths.

Liberally apply broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 20 minutes prior to sun exposure and reapply every 2 hours.

Cover up with clothing including a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Perform a monthly self examination of your skin looking for the signs of skin cancer. See the ABCDE’s of self examination here.

Because of the sun exposure most people take in their younger years, we recommend a yearly skin examination by a dermatologist.
